Don't fear a Durban curry – embrace it, and you might be pleasantly surprised. But, a little tip: don’t be a hero. Take some advice from a seasoned curry lover before diving in!

Whether you're from Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, or anywhere else in South Africa, you'll agree that Durbanites are famous for their curries.

Durban is well known for serving some of the best curries in the country. What makes them unique is that no two curry recipes are the same – each household or restaurant has its own version. Some like it spicy, while others like it mild, but what all Durban curries share is their unmistakable, aromatic depth of flavour.

Tim Morrel, a Cape Town student known for his campus shenanigans, recently shared how his experience of tasting his first Durban curry during a visit to our city.

In the video, Morrel joined a Durbanite who openly confessed he wasn't a fan of curry, yet they both decided to dive in. The twist? Instead of pairing the curry with naan, rice, or roti, they ate it as if it were soup.

As a first-time curry eater, tackling it this way could be seen in one of two ways: admirable or silly.

Morrel described Durban curry as "dangerous", and while some might agree with him, ending up on the toilet is never a good look for anyone. Maybe he just got a curry that wasn’t exactly beginner-friendly.

Check out what some of the people on TikTok had to say about their video.

  • "Come now ladies... it's not so bad."

  • "Where is the rice or roti."

  • "We Durbanites were teething on curry powder, so we got years of training with curry."

  • "I get the same reaction to bland food ... spice is life."

  • "Why such a hot curry for your first try... and no rice, bread or roti to kill the heat... we also usually eat with a cold salad."

  • "Always drink milk with hot stuff and no bread, rice, roti, naan? Dude, you should’ve at least had a bunny."

  • "I've never seen boys this scared of food."
