Storytelling: Captivating our kids with stories and songs
Updated | By The Workzone with Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp
Telling stories to our children like a quirky aunt, full of colourful animation, squeaking sounds and a symphony of songs, is exactly the rhythm our children need, says our equally colourful guest this week, Lynn Joffe.
Lynn Joffe's brainchild, 'Solid Gold Story Time', was recently awarded the Podcast of the Year in the inaugural South African Podcast Awards, under the auspices of the South African Podcasters Guild.
A remarkable achievement, and this week she brings her powerful stories to our audience to help us understand why storytelling with our children is so important for their mental health and development.

About Lynn Joffe
Born in London and raised on four continents, Lynn Joffe has been telling stories since she exited the womb. Copywriter by training, producer by design, maverick by nature, Lynn cut her teeth at several of SA’s top ad agencies and started her own company, Creatrix Storytelling, in the noughties. She has conceptualised, written and produced bespoke audio and radio campaigns for blue chip brands in 11 South African languages. Recently, Lynn has pivoted her vast experience towards the fastest growing platform on the planet: podcasting.
Her brainchild, Solid Gold Story Time, was recently awarded Podcast of the Year in the inaugural South African Podcast Awards, under the auspices of the South African Podcasters Guild.
Solid Gold Story Time picked up golds for Best Kids, Family & Parenting, Best Innovation & Creativity and a silver for Best Production. The podcast also won Best Children’s Podcast at the African Podcast and Voice Awards in September. Solid Gold Story Time is a unique platform to delight and soothe very young children, while stimulating their love of stories, fostering literacy and literature. Lynn holds a BA from Unisa and an MA from Wits. She has conducted a myriad of storytelling and writing workshops for all ages across South Africa and the UK. She is an alumnus of the Radio Hall of Fame and a brand ambassador for the ECD’s Read to Lead literacy campaign. She represented South Africa at the Gothenburg Book Fair in 2023, was Lead Judge in the Literary Category for DSAC’s CCI Awards 2024, and program consultant to the Filven Literary Festival in Venezuela 2024.
Lynn’s adult novel, The Gospel According to Wanda B. Lazarus, was published in 2020 and was shortlisted in the NIHSS Award for Fiction and longlisted for The CNA/Sunday Times Fiction Award. Her children’s book, The Tale of Stingray Charles, written with Adam Howard, features as one of the charming episodes on Solid Gold Story Time and is also available in storybook form. You can catch Solid Gold Story Time wherever you get your podcasts.
