Three things you should avoid doing to protect your brain health

The first one is something that many South Africans can attest to doing; in fact, we are part of the worst in the world.

Many people obsess over their physical fitness, but it is rare to find people focusing on their mental health. When we speak about mental health, we are referring to your brain function as well as your overall mental health.

A neuroscientist named Emily McDonald has a huge following on social media. She often shares tips on how to protect your brain's health, from boosting your thinking abilities to calming your nerves. She offers insight into the brain engagingly, allowing people to understand all the brain talk.

In a video that grabbed our attention, Emily speaks about three things she avoids to protect her brain health.

The first point concerns checking your phone first thing in the morning. Many people are guilty of it; in fact, South Africans have been noted as the worst in the world when it comes to how many times they check their smartphones.

An article in Business Tech said, "According to a study by the tech website Electronics Hub, South Africans spend 56.8% of their awake hours a day looking at screens, at 9 hours and 24 minutes."

Emily explained that when we wake up in the morning, our minds are in a programmable state, and therefore, how we start our day off can set the tone for the rest of the day. When you check your phone first thing in the morning you are essentially setting the tone for the rest of the day, meaning you will continue with this action throughout the day.

The second topic she discussed was negative self-talk. She explained that the more you speak negatively to yourself, the more it gets wired into your brain.

Essentially, what is wired into your brain is what you manifest...

And the third topic she spoke about was eating highly processed foods. She supported her stance by saying that there is plenty of research that says what you eat impacts your brain health.

Watch her explain the above on her TikTok video below.
