Tips to make your trip back home safe and enjoyable
Updated | By The Workzone with Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp/Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
Staying ahead of possible issues on the road is one of the best ways to approach travel. It's always a good idea to be prepared for anything that might come your way.
Many families have already hit the road to make it in time for the new school term. If you're planning to head home this week, here are some last-minute reminders to help your trip go smoothly.
1. Make a checklist
Start your planning with a checklist. Write down all the things you must pack and do before heading out.
2. Pack smart
Ensure that all the items you may need during your trip are easily accessible. Keep your valuables like your ID, passport, chargers, medications, and reading materials in your backpack or carrier bag for ease of access.
For your main luggage, roll your clothes instead of folding them to save space and avoid creases. Place all items that need laundering in a separate bag to make unpacking at home much easier.
3. Stay safe
No matter your travel plans, always take safety precautions. Depending on where you’re going, consider wearing a mask, practising social distancing, and sanitising your hands regularly.
Stay alert to your surroundings, whether on the road or at the airport. Criminals will take any opportunity to strike.
If you're driving, run a safety check on your vehicle before setting off. Check your tyre pressure, oil and water, headlights, and wipers, and ensure your car is properly licensed. The driver should also have a valid licence.
4. Take care of yourself
If you’re driving, take regular breaks, and if possible, split the driving with another driver to avoid fatigue.
Stay hydrated during your journey, and get enough rest before your trip.
5. Be prepared
Long trips can be unpredictable, so pack snacks, water, and items, such as books or a downloaded show, to
keep yourself entertained.
Keep a spare set of clothes, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and wet wipes in your carry-on luggage for quick refreshers during the journey.
If you’re flying, check-in online early to avoid long queues at the airport. And leave early; you never know what awaits you, so it's good to be prepared for anything.
6. Emergency contacts
Have all emergency numbers easily accessible to everyone travelling. If you are flying, make sure you have shared your travel itinerary with a loved one who can track your travels.
