Shopping around this time of year is never hassle-free, but it can be if you take time to organise yourself and prepare beforehand.

We're not sure if you have noticed, but everyone seems to be crowding the malls and shopping centres in an attempt to beat the festive season madness. This, in turn, is making it more challenging because it means you are already behind.

But it could also be about approaching your shopping intelligently. Here are some useful tips for planning your Christmas shopping.

1. Make a list

No one can ever say (with complete confidence) that they didn't benefit from having a shopping list. Writing down what you need to get, accompanied by the places you need to visit, can make a world of difference to your shopping.

2. Look for deals

Stores will be running a range of promotions, sales, and discounts. Take advantage of these by looking around and comparing prices. You can check online but also check for gift catalogues and end-of-year sale brochures; you never know when you might strike it lucky.

Be wary of things that are too good to be true, as much as there are specials, there are also scams.

3. Shop online

This is a big time-saver and sometimes a big money-saver. Check online for items that you could purchase, such as gifts, groceries, clothing, etc.

You sometimes get free delivery if you shop for a minimum amount. Not only does online shopping help you save money, but it also helps with convenience.

4. Read reviews

Before making any big purchases, read product reviews submitted by past buyers. These can help greatly in making your purchasing decision. If the site you are using doesn't have a reviews section, then research it on social media or use your preferred search engine.

5. Returns policy

When making gift purchases, make sure to find out about the refund and returns policy. Some stores do not offer a return policy, and others have a specific time period during which you can return an item.

Always ask for and keep the receipt; this is required if the gift is malfunctioning or if your loved one wants to return it. Also, be aware of the terms and conditions surrounding returning the item. Some items need tags on them, and some should not be opened if you want a voucher or refund.
