Is it a vegetable peeler or a food sharpener? We don't actually know.

Some kitchen essentials are non-negotiable, but what qualifies as a must-have has changed over the years. Gone are the days when it was trendy to clutter your kitchen with single-purpose gadgets – today, minimalism is the goal.

That hasn’t stopped marketers from churning out household tools designed for the most niche tasks. Social media trends constantly introduce a new wave of game-changing kitchen gadgets, many of which are more gimmicky than practical.

Impulse shopping can quickly turn your kitchen into a graveyard of unused tools, and one particular item making waves online proves just that.

Believe it or not, it resembles an oversized pencil sharpener – but for your vegetables.

Labelled as a vegetable peeler, the gadget even features a picture of a carrot on the packaging. Does that mean it’s only for carrots? Or all cylindrical vegetables? If so, why not just call it a carrot peeler?

It’s a bit of a brain-teaser. Sometimes, you have to wonder what problems marketers – or should we say, inventors – are trying to solve in their kitchens.

If you're curious, this so-called vegetable peeler is currently selling for R14.99 at Pep Home.

People found it quite amusing – here's what some had to say:

  • "Please do a demo on how it works."

  • "Why do they even call it a 'Vegetable Peeler'."

  • "Vegetable peeler – NO Carrots sharpener – YES."

  • "Cooking made fun. As I add more carrots to our veggies budget. The kids will be sharpening carrots unprovoked."
