Visiting KZN? Here's how to check the beach status

The beaches are the main attraction for many of us when visiting KZN, so here's how to make sure the beach that you choose is safe to swim in.

Who doesn't love to visit the beach during the festive holidays?

The December break is synonymous with beach visits, where swimming in the ocean, making sandcastles, and soaking up the sun are a must.

The coast generally makes people feel like they are on holiday.

KZN, particularly Durban, often attracts travellers from around South Africa to enjoy the beaches. E-Coli has dampened that in the past. Earlier this week, eNCA reported concerns over the status of several Durban beaches; check out the report from YouTube below:

How to stay informed before visiting beaches in KwaZulu Natal

Visit the eThekwini Municipality website, durban.gov.za, and click on the 'Beach Status' tab. Another page will open called, 'Beach Water Quality Results'.

This page provides a breakdown of the water quality, indicated by colour and score. Blue is excellent, green is acceptable, and red is poor.

The names of the beaches in KZN follow, and each is represented with a colour and score, along with its status as to whether it is open or closed. The quality status of the beaches is only updated if the status changes.

The lower the number on the quality status, the safer the beach water is, but remember to use the colour-coded indicators as your guide.

As of yesterday, only two beaches, Anstey's Beach and Reunion, located on the South Coast of KZN, were closed.

Other than the beach status, remember there are a host of things to do in KZN, always remain safe and don't drink and drive.
