WATCH: Son with mental illness trashes home

A video shared on Twitter of a trashed home misinformed people that it was done by a 12-year-old who was upset over his mother taking away his phone. But it was completely wrong. The damage was done by a 15-year-old boy with mental illness.

Watching things online comes with its flaws on some level or the other. For instance, when something is shared with the incorrect information and then spreads like wildfire.

It can be viral content for the one sharing it but what about the person whose life is being affected by the hate or negativity shared online over that post?

A question that rarely is addressed by social media users who have fallen into this threshold of virality.

This can be said of a woman who posted a video on Twitter that was shared with her privately. The video shows damages to a home as if it had been rummaged by a burglar or worse.

The headline of the post read: "A 12 year old boy did this bc his mother took away his phone …" (Twitter)

After the video blew up online, the poster, Shania, came forth with another post on the same stream admitting that she was in fact misinformed about the nature of the video.

She said: "1/? hi y’all. I did not expect this video to blow up like this, but thankfully it did. I just got off the phone with the woman in the video. I was misinformed when I first posted it (my sincerest apologies) The truth is that this was the result of an episode her 15 y|o son had last week while off his meds. It is a really sad and unfortunate situation, and our sis can use our help! That being said, her best friend created a gofundme to help cover the costs of the extensive damages and to help her back on her feet. So let’s do it!" (Twitter)

Sadly, the mom had to make a video to set things straight as a GoFund me page was created for her and her family.

Check out what she had to say below, it is truly a hard reality that things aren't always what they seem to be.

And a great lesson in that we should always approach things by giving people the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes things aren't as they seem at first glance.
