Is it just us or is this a wild way of washing your chicken?

Different cultures often have different cooking practices. In particular, when cooking meat, some believe they should wash or soak the meat before cooking it, and others prefer to cook it without washing it.

There is a medical point of view, but for the most part, it's a matter of preference.

The Food and Home online magazine shared that dietitian and nutritionist Robyn-Leigh Mentor says that "washing meat may pose additional food safety and health risks by spreading bacteria to other surfaces and foods that will be eaten raw, such as fruit or salad."

In saying all this, it is absurd that some might think it okay to wash meat with something like dishwashing liquid

Usually, people wash meat with water, saltwater, lemon, or vinegar. Dishwashing liquid isn't on the list of cleaning liquids for meat.

A video shared on X shows a woman preparing a meal for her family. She first washes the chicken breasts with dishwashing liquid and then uses a scourer sponge to clean the meat.

Have a look at some of the comments from the post.

  • "Interesting method. personally, I like to strap mine to the top of my car and run it through the car wash once - or twice if I have guests."
  • "Maybe misinformation, but i heard heat kills bacteria. It’s almost like cooking the food will do it better than scrubbing it with soap."
  • "It is believed that detergent does not completely eliminate the bacteria, and the risk of food poisoning actually increases because the remaining bacteria are dispersed by droplets when water is poured onto the food.
