Buffalo saves lizard by throwing a lion into the air
Updated | By The Workzone with Barney Simon
A buffalo near Lower Sabie in the Kruger National Park was not prepared to let a pride of lions take a lizard as its prey.
During a drive on the H4-1 road in the Lower Sabie area of the Kruger National Park, Sune Eloff and her group witnessed an incredible encounter involving a pride of lions, a buffalo, and a monitor lizard.
Observing what they believed was impala coming down to drink at the river, the group noticed a pride sleeping peacefully near the water. Moments later, the lions sprang up and advanced into the reeds nearby.
Sune and the group watched as one lion walked out of the reeds with a monitor lizard in its grip. Sune described what happened next:
"I took out my camera [so that I could get a closer look at what was happening]. Suddenly, a young lion came out of the reeds with a water monitor lizard that he had just caught. This is when the entire scene started to unfold. Some buffalo in the vicinity had noticed that the lion had captured a lizard and one of them came storming in as if he knew this lizard needed protecting. To our absolute astonishment, the buffalo proceeded to get his head right under the puzzled lion and somersault him through the air. It was crazy!"
The buffalo took its horns to the lion, disarming it and causing it to drop the monitor lizard.
Sune and her group could not believe their eyes when they saw how the buffalo flipped the lion three times. The buffalo walked away, leaving the lion shaken.
That is one very lucky lizard!
