"Goooooooooodevening!”

Do you remember Uncle Paul's Bedtime Story? It became iconic in the 1980s when Barney Simon played them on his late-night radio show on Radio 5. Uncle Paul wrote and produced all of the stories.

Among the scary tales that used to thrill listeners were "House of Corpses", "Mountain of Madness" and "Smiling Surgeon".

As a Halloween exclusive, we're bringing you one of the classics, and Barney's all-time favourite, "The Collective Mind". Listen below.

“Uncle Paul played bass guitar in a band called The Motown Sect in Manchester with Lemmy of Motorhead before they became famous. They were good friends for many years,” recalls Barney.

“Paul moved to South Africa in the 70s or 80s, I think? He doesn't even know! The first time I met him, he was wearing a Motorhead t-shirt. A good start.  He called me one night on air and told me he does voice-overs. I loved his voice when I heard it over the phone, and we hooked up for a meeting. We discussed telling stories on radio. The rest is history!”

Barney says he and Paul performed together at many clubs around South Africa.

“Paul sat in the middle of the dance floor and told a story with everybody sitting around him. SCARY THOUGHT!” chuckles Barney.

Uncle Paul now lives in Manchester, but Barney is keen to reunite with Uncle Paul in South Africa for a few club gigs.

Imagine that!
