Safari boat ride in Botswana was interrupted by a charging elephant
A close encounter with an elephant almost ended in a capsized boat for a group on an excursion in Botswana.
On the Chobe River in northern Botswana, a small group on safari watched as an elephant grazed quietly near their boat. One of the group, Su-Ann Marais, tells LatestSightings.com that everyone was relatively calm as they did not expect the elephant to make any sudden moves, and they did not believe that such a large animal would be able to swim very fast in the deep water.
Almost as soon as they made that assumption, the elephant proved them wrong.
The elephant, presumably irritated by the sounds coming from the boats in the water, charged at the boat and pushed it backwards. At this point, the elephant is so close to the boat that the passengers could possibly have been impaled by its tusks!

Su-Ann says their guide told everyone it was best to stay inside the boat, but did not make any attempts to steer the boat away. The sounds of the engine would only have agitated the elephant further and caused it to injure one of the passengers.
Su-Ann is grateful to have seen an elephant up close, but says she understands how it must have felt to have humans invading its privacy that way.
