Truck and trailer overturns on Tappan Zee Bridge
Updated | By Poelano Malema
Motorists witnessed a frightening scene when a truck and trailer hauling scrap metal overturned on the Tappan Zee Bridge in New York City. The horrific accident happened during rush hour on Friday the 13th; a day known as an unlucky day in Western superstition. The video was captured by the dashcam of a vehicle that was right behind the truck.
In the video, the truck can be seen traveling at highway speed before the trailer flips on to its left side and pulls the truck over with it. This caused the trailer’s rear wheels and axle to hit the vehicle before rolling forward. Fortunately, the driver was not injured.
“My husband experienced this horrible accident on Tappan Zee Bridge on 5/13/2016. His dashcam recorded the scary moment. The rear wheels and axle hit his car before rolling forward. He is fine and is cool as always,” the wife of the driver wrote on the video description.
According to a Journal News report, police said the accident was caused by a failure in the truck's suspension system, and this led to the trailer being thrust out of control. At least five other vehicles were hit by debris. However, police say the cars were not seriously damaged. The horrific accident caused chaos in the city, with both lanes closed for at least four hours.
Motorists posted images of the accident on social media.
