Visitors to Dierenrijk zoo in Mierlo in the Netherlands witnessed a tragic event involving bears and wolves early this week.

Visitors who saw the scene unfold tried to get caretakers to step in, but it was too late and the wolf did not survive.
Dierenrijk offered counselling for witnesses who were badly affected by the events.
Representatives of the zoo say the bears and wolves have lived in the same enclosure for a long time and are encouraged to play with each other. Caretakers at the zoo were saddened by the turn of events: "This is very sad... because the bears and the wolves have been living together in harmony for a long time."
