Watch: Browns Jewellery store robbery

Footage was released on Crime Watch’s YouTube page of robbery that took place at Browns Jewellery store.

Robbery

The robbery took place on 12 October, at the Mall of the South, in Johannesburg.

The mall was officially opened in September on Heritage Day, and less than a month since its opening, it has already fallen victim to a robbery.

The YouTube video description reads:

Robbery at Mall of the South in Aspen Hills. Browns Jewellery store robbed

"Six armed suspects entered the mall and attempted to rob two jewellery store and fled off. Shots were fired but no-one was injured."

Gauteng police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.

"It is believed that the suspects entered a jewellery store and one suspect pointed a firearm at an employee."

Marcus could not confirm the value of the items stolen at both stores.

Business was back to normal by late afternoon.

The Facts are the following:

* Three men entered the Browns Jewellery store posing as customers. They held up the store whilst they grabbed jewellery and exited the store towards the parking entrance of the mall.

* They then joined up with three other accomplices on their way to the parking garages and their exit. On route to the exit, the armed suspect ran into the Swarovski jewellery store and grabbed a tray of rings.

* The suspects then all exited the mall, shooting one shot towards the floor and another towards the ceiling. The entire incident took place within three minutes – only one suspect was armed.

* No one was injured during the incident.

* The suspects fled and SAPS are busy with their investigation. The safety of our shoppers and tenants are of the utmost importance to us and we are working closely with the authorities to assist with the investigation.

* In a separate incident, on the other side of the mall, a quarter of an hour after the robbery, a staff member in one of the fast food outlets panicked on the news of the robbery and rushed out of the rear entrance of their store. On doing so she accidentally entered a refuse room, and fell down a refuse duct. She sustained a laceration wound to her head and is currently being treated at the Baragwanath Hospital. We confirm that she is not in a critical condition, and on behalf of the management team, we wish her a speedy recovery.

* Whilst most are concerned over the events of October 12, the management team of Mall of the South are satisfied that the security and technology related to the safety of our customers is comprehensively provided for and that such incident is a regrettable example of the current security situation in South Africa, which we can only respond to, but cannot control.
