Why does this cat always look like she has just seen a ghost?

Curious Zelda has not been the same since she was adopted from a shelter.
The mind of a cat is a mysterious, complicated place. There have definitely been moments when you thought your cat was plotting to take over the household - there's just something about the look in their eyes?
Matt from Kent in the United Kingdom adopted his cat, Zelda, three years ago, after reading an ad that said: "don't be put off by my spooked expression".
Zelda, or "Curious Zelda", as she has become known online, does indeed have a startled look in her eyes. According to Matt, Zelda looks like this all the time. Zelda's round, glassy eyes are permanently opened very wide, and that is just how she goes about life.

Matt believes the name Curious Zelda is very fitting because "she wanders around our home as if it's all new to her, sniffing everything in her path".
Visitors to Matt's home love Zelda, and conversation always turns to her surprised expression.
Matt started a Twitter account where he posts pictures of Zelda with captions that try to make sense of why she is so wide-eyed.

The question is: are Zelda's extra wide eyes a delayed reaction to something that happened to her in one of her previous lives, or is she just lucky to have big, bright eyes?
