We know eating out can be a challenge with children. They get tired, bored, want to play, and some restaurants don’t appreciate the extra noise they can make. Luckily, there are some understanding folk out there who love kids and welcome their presence at a meal out. We know eating out can be a challenge with children. They get tired, bored, want to play, and some restaurants don’t appreciate the extra noise they can make.

Luckily, there are some understanding folk out there who love kids and welcome their presence at a meal out. So next time you're dreading a weekend brunch, have a look at our top suggestions for a family friendly place to eat.

1) Al Fiume

Situated on the Hennops River, this Italian eatery is always child friendly. If you really want a good day out though, best save it for the last Sunday of the month, which is Family Fun Day. You’ll be served a 3 course meal (2 for the kids), along with wine tasting and live jazz. The kids have loads of entertainment options too, ranging from face painting to an animal farm and jumping castle.

2) Toni’s Pizza

This pizzeria in Menlo Park has a good reputation for a reason! The pizza is some of the best you’ll find in Pretoria, and combines lots of new and interesting flavour. The service is great, and if you don’t like pizza, there’s always pasta options too. Their dessert pizza laden with chocolate, cream, hazelnuts and banana is a must-try. Sounds strange, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised…and the best part is still to come! There’s a kiddies play area right outside with a jungle gym and various play things.

3) Papachinos

Situated in Hazeldean, just outside the furniture shop ‘Sevens’, this café offers Italian and continental food. It has a menu with options to please everyone and a big children’s play area to keep them entertained while you sip your coffee. Not only that, there are designated staff members to play with the kids and supervise them too! What more could you want?

4) Panarotti’s

Although we normally try to avoid chain restaurants we’ll make an exception for Panarotti’s. You want to know the best thing about this place? Kids under 12 eat free on Sundays! That’s every Sunday, any pizza or pasta from the kids menu. Additionally, they let kids make their own pizzas with all their favourite toppings, which they love! Perfect, right?

5) Rosemary Hill

This is a little off the beaten track, as it lies about 8km outside Pretoria East, but is worth the drive. The whole place is family friendly and set in the country with walking trails, biking trails and excursions over the weekend. It also has a playground with a trampoline. The restaurant is in beautiful surrounds, but bear in mind that it is only open from 9 to 12 on weekends, so get there for a leisurely weekend brunch.
