How to check for breast cancer

Tens of thousands of women around the world die from it yearly. However, research has revealed that doing regular examinations can reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.

With October being breast cancer awareness month, we take a look at ways in which you can check for breast cancer.
- Although breast cancer affects women of all ages and races, women over the age of 50 are most at risk. So it is important for women who are in their 40s to go for a yearly mammograms - a special x-ray that detects lumps in the breast.
- Women can also examine their own breasts to check for a lump in the breast or armpit.
- An unusual increase in the size of the breast or an enlargement of the glands can also be a sign of breast cancer.
- If your breast starts discharging or there is a change in the skin around the nipple, that could also be a cause for concern.
- Unusual swelling in the armpit may also be a sign of breast cancer.
The best course of action is prevention, so always be aware and take care of yourself.
