Robben Island has been chosen as South Africa’s most loved landmark at the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award.
South Africa is one of the most loved countries in the world. Not only is it home to the Big 5, but it has incredible landmarks. It is the country where great leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu were born, and it is no surprise that the most loved landmark in the country is Robben Island.
Robben Island, which houses the notorious jail cell where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, was rated the most beloved landmark in South Africa at the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award. The museum also made it into the top 10 most loved landmarks in Africa. Although it didn’t get the number one spot in the Africa category, it came out in 9th place.
“(The museum) will continue to reposition itself as a responsible tourist destination that is also tasked with the conservation of the island as a cultural landscape,” Robben Island Museum’s interim chief executive Mava Dada was quoted as saying in IOL.
Enver Duminy, the chief executive of Cape Town Tourism, also expressed gratitude over the win. “We are thrilled that a Cape Town landmark has been chosen as the best in South Africa and that the importance of the role Robben Island plays in the heritage of our nation places it high on the world’s tourism agenda,” he reportedly said.
The awards are based on millions of reviews and opinions collected on the popular global travel website over the past 12 months, the publication reported.
