Get warmed up for Christmas with your top 5 festive tunes!
Updated | By Lee-Roy Wright
We can almost taste Christmas! Many of us are those people who you catch singing along to ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ while strolling through the mall or picking up some great gifts. Yes, we know you’re judging us.
Carols have become an essential element to the festive spirit recipe, and in light of that, here are some ferociously festive tunes for your iPod and your holiday drive!
5. Last Christmas by WHAM!
Although not the most cheery Christmas song, this still has to be one of the best. Especially for the grinches who don’t like Christmas. We’ll mention no names, but every office has one! So let’s get that out of the way first and then move on to the happy Christmas songs for the rest of us.
4. Frosty The Snowman
Although this song doesn’t actually make any mention of Christmas itself, we’re all going to continue to assume that it is indeed a Christmas song. This was one of the more hotly contested songs as to a favourite version. Some were die hard Jackson 5 defenders, some stood by Nat King Cole, and others still went for the more recent cover of Kimberley Locke. There were others mentioned too, but we eventually settled on The Jackson 5. The upbeat vibe of this song about a snowman coming to life is always a hit with kids in particular, but our office knows all the words!
3. White Christmas
A number one selling song, this one’s popularity has faded a little with the new generation. It’s still wonderful to listen to when you’re relaxing with a glass of wine or sherry, and obviously would be perfect in front of a fire looking at snow-covered streets (we wish!). This one will definitely be popular with the parents and grandparents, though your kids might ask you why you’re playing such a ‘boooooring’ song. Ignore them, and enjoy it anyway! The Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby versions are great classics, but if you want to modernise it a bit (or if the kids won’t tolerate anything older than the 90’s) then try this Kelly Clarkson version – she does it justice!
2. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
Covers of this classic are varied and plentiful. Everyone from Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande to Frank Sinatra have given this a shot, with some versions being better than others. One of our favourites is the Carpenters’ live version back from the mid 70’s. The video quality is blurry, but Karen Carpenter’s exceptional voice shines through regardless.
1. All I Want For Christmas Is You
Could there ever be another Christmas tune at the number one spot? One of the catchiest and most well-known Christmas songs of all time, and especially of modern times, All I Want For Christmas Is You is a timeless classic and a Jacaranda favourite! We love this version where the original writer and performer Mariah Carey teams up with Michael Buble, whose velvety smooth voice takes the song to another level.
