Struggle stalwart, Winnie
Madikizela-Mandela, will receive
a category one special official funeral.
Minister in the Presidency, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and the Inter-Ministerial Committee briefed the media on the details of Mam’ Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s funeral on 14 April 2018.
“This is the highest funeral you can give to a civilian. The state funeral is only for heads of state and former heads of state. This one will have elements of military but it is not a state funeral but a special official funeral category one, the highest that you can give to someone that is not a head of state,” says Dlamini-Zuma.
Yesterday, the ANC announced a ten day mourning period for the struggle icon, which will see South Africans commemorate and celebrate Madikizela-Mandela’s life over this time.
A memorial service is also expected to be held, although details of the venue have not yet been finalised..
“Initially we looked at Regina Mundi, as the family wished. But this is being changed and we are looking at this very stadium now. But that will be finalised later and the discussions will be going on to just firm up the logistics,” adds Dlamini-Zuma.
Madikizela Mandela’s funeral service will be held at the Orlando Stadium and she will be buried in Fourways, north of Johannesburg.
